The Argus newspaper , Saturday 16 September 1865, records that Patrick O'Shea was rewarded for arrest of cattle thieves while working as a policeman at Benalla. The following rewards have been paid from the Police Reward Fund in the course of the week:-To Senior constable James Whelan (1,305) and Constable Patrick O'Shea (7G6), at Benalla, £3 and £2 respectively, in acknowledgement of their tact, shown in prosecuting Edward J. Bounds and William Hogan for cattle-stealing, sentenced to three years and five years respectively.
